Gaviscon is a globally recognized over-the-counter medication used for the relief of heartburn and acid indigestion. The brand's origin dates back to 1964 when Swedish radiologist Dr. Stig Sandmark discovered the benefits of viscosity as a reflux suppressant, eventually leading to the launch of the brand in the United Kingdom in 1970.
Gaviscon is unique for its 'raft-forming' technology; it uses sodium alginate (often derived from Norwegian seaweed) to create a protective physical barrier that sits on top of stomach contents to prevent acid from rising into the esophagus.
Ownership of the brand is split geographically due to historical corporate acquisitions and spin-offs. In most international markets, including Europe, Asia, and Australia, Gaviscon is owned by the British multinational Reckitt Benckiser Group plc (Reckitt). However, in the United States and Canada, the rights are held by Haleon plc, which was formed in 2022 as a spin-off from GSK's consumer healthcare division. Manufacturing occurs in multiple locations worldwide, including major facilities in the UK and the US (such as Tarrytown, NY), to serve regional demands.
