Amaro Nonino Quintessentia is an iconic Italian herbal liqueur produced in the Friuli region of northern Italy. The spirit is uniquely distinguished by its base of UE Grappa, a grape distillate, rather than a neutral grain spirit typical of many other amari. It is infused with a proprietary blend of alpine herbs, roots, and botanicals, then aged in Nevers, Limousin, and ex-Sherry oak barrels.
The brand is the creation of the Nonino family, pioneers in the distillation industry who founded their company in 1897. Amaro Nonino specifically gained worldwide fame after the recipe was refined in 1992 based on a 1933 family formula. The brand remains entirely family-owned through the company Nonino Distillatori S.p.A., reflecting its heritage and commitment to artisanal production methods in Percoto, Italy. It is widely recognized for its prominent role in modern cocktail culture, most notably as a key ingredient in the Paper Plane cocktail.
