Café Bustelo is an iconic American coffee brand with deep roots in Hispanic culture. It was founded by Gregorio Bustelo, a Spanish immigrant who arrived in East Harlem, New York, in 1928. After visiting Cuba and falling in love with the local coffee culture, he established the Bustelo Coffee Roasting Company. The brand quickly became a staple in the Latin American communities of New York City and eventually expanded across the United States.
While the brand was originally born in New York, it was owned for several decades by Rowland Coffee Roasters, Inc., based in Miami, Florida. In 2011, the brand was acquired by The J.M. Smucker Company. Today, Café Bustelo continues to be a major player in the espresso-style coffee market. While the beans are sourced from various coffee-growing regions globally, the roasting and packaging primarily take place in the United States to maintain the distinct, dark roast profile that the brand is known for.
The brand is currently part of the extensive portfolio of The J.M. Smucker Company, an American food and beverage conglomerate headquartered in Orrville, Ohio. Under Smucker's ownership, Café Bustelo has transitioned from a regional ethnic brand to a mainstream national favorite, widely recognized for its vibrant yellow and red packaging and its historic 'espresso-style' ground coffee.
