Liberté is a heritage dairy brand with its origins deeply rooted in Montreal, Canada. Founded in 1936 by the Kaporovsky families, it originally began as a small business producing traditional kosher dairy products before expanding into the premium yogurt market. For decades, the brand became synonymous with high-quality, artisan-style yogurt, eventually becoming a staple in both the Canadian and American markets.

The manufacturing and ownership of Liberté have undergone significant shifts in recent years. In 2021, General Mills reached an agreement to sell its interest in the Liberté brand. Today, the brand is owned and operated by General Mills in the United States, while the global rights and Canadian operations were sold back to the French dairy cooperative Sodiaal. As a result, manufacturing primarily takes place in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, for the Canadian market, and in various facilities across the United States for the American market.
