Tempo is a legendary brand of paper tissues, originally founded in Germany in 1929 by the Vereinigte Papierwerke AG in Nuremberg. For decades, it has been so dominant in the German market that the name 'Tempo' became a generic trademark for pocket tissues in Germany and surrounding countries.
The brand has undergone several ownership changes over the years. It was acquired by the American company Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1994, which later sold the brand to the Swedish company SCA (Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget) in 2007. In 2017, SCA spun off its hygiene and health operations into a new company called Essity, which remains the ultimate owner of the brand today.
While Tempo products are sold across Europe, manufacturing remains heavily concentrated in Germany, particularly at the Neuss plant, though Essity operates various production sites across the continent to serve local markets.
