Origin and Development

Red Star OS (Pulgunbyol) is the official state-sanctioned Linux-based operating system developed in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The development was initiated by the Korea Computer Center (KCC) in the early 2000s as a means to move away from Western software dependencies and to provide a secure, controlled computing environment for internal use. The operating system utilizes a modified version of the Linux kernel and has evolved through several versions, notably shifting from a Windows XP-like interface in version 2.0 to an interface heavily inspired by Apple's macOS in version 3.0.

Ownership and Control

Unlike commercial software products, Red Star OS is owned and managed by the North Korean government through the Korea Computer Center. It is designed with deep integration of state security features, including internal watermarking of files to track their spread and a modified web browser named Naenara that connects primarily to the North Korean internal intranet (Kwangmyong). The software is not sold internationally and is strictly intended for domestic use within North Korea's governmental, educational, and public sectors.
