CFM56 turbofan engine

The CFM56 is a family of high-bypass turbofan aircraft engines produced by CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aerospace (formerly GE Aviation) in the United States and Safran Aircraft Engines (formerly Snecma) in France. It is one of the most successful jet engines in aviation history, powering a vast number of commercial and military aircraft, most notably the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320 family.

Manufacturing for the CFM56 is divided across two continents to maintain the 50/50 partnership balance. GE Aerospace produces the high-pressure compressor, combustor, and high-pressure turbine, primarily in the United States. Safran Aircraft Engines builds the low-pressure system, including the fan and the low-pressure turbine, primarily in France. Final assembly is conducted at both the GE facility in Evendale, Ohio, and the Safran facility in Villaroche, France.

Ownership of the brand and the underlying technology remains split equally between the two founding companies. This partnership has been consistently renewed, extending the joint venture's duration to ensure continued support, maintenance, and development of successor engines like the LEAP series through 2050 and beyond.
