The AK-47, or Avtomat Kalashnikova, is one of the most recognized firearms in the world. Designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the Soviet Union shortly after World War II, it was officially adopted by the Soviet Army in 1949. The rifle's design focused on simplicity, reliability under extreme conditions, and ease of maintenance, which has contributed to its global proliferation.
While originally manufactured at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant (now part of Kalashnikov Concern) in Russia, the AK-47 and its numerous variants have been produced in dozens of countries under license or via reverse engineering. Major production hubs have historically included China, Romania, Bulgaria, and Poland. In the modern era, the brand is managed by the Kalashnikov Concern, which has undergone significant restructuring and privatization to modernize its production facilities and expand its export capabilities.
Today, the Kalashnikov Concern is the primary Russian manufacturer of the platform, though the 'AK' style of firearm remains the most produced and copied rifle architecture globally. Ownership of the brand remains tied to Russian industrial interests, operating as a key entity within the defense sector.
