The brand was founded in 1917 by Pasquale Capozzi, who immigrated from Italy to Canada and began importing high-quality Italian food products to meet the demands of the growing Italian-Canadian community. Today, Unico is known for its wide range of products including pasta, oils, beans, and preserved vegetables.

While Unico is based in Ontario, Canada, and handles much of its processing and packaging locally, specialized ingredients such as capers are typically sourced from traditional cultivation regions in the Mediterranean, such as Morocco, Turkey, or Spain, and then distributed under the Unico label. The brand is currently owned by Sun-Brite Foods Inc., a leading Canadian food processor that acquired Unico in 1997 to expand its portfolio in the Mediterranean food sector.
