Focal is a world-renowned French audio manufacturer founded in 1979 in Saint-Étienne by Jacques Mahul. Originally starting as a specialist in speaker drivers, the brand quickly established itself at the forefront of high-fidelity sound technology. The Listen Professional model shown here is designed specifically for studio use, blending the brand's heritage in acoustic performance with modern consumer portability.
In 2011, Focal-JMlab merged with the British high-end audio hardware brand Naim Audio to create a new holding company called Vervent Audio Group. This partnership has allowed both brands to dominate the premium audio market globally. In 2014, the private equity firm Naxicap Partners became the majority shareholder of the group, and since 2019, Vervent Audio Group has been backed by Alpha Private Equity, ensuring a strong European financial foundation for its continued expansion into 2026 and beyond.
While Focal is famous for hand-making its flagship high-end headphones (like the Utopia or Stellia) and speaker cabinets at its specialized workshops in Saint-Étienne, France, many of its entry-level and professional-series products, such as the Listen Professional, are manufactured in China under strict quality controls to maintain competitive pricing and scale. This global manufacturing strategy allows Focal to offer its signature sound signature to a wider professional audience while maintaining its design and R&D headquarters in France.
