Estrella is one of Sweden's most iconic snack brands, particularly famous for its potato chips and popcorn. The brand was founded in 1946 by Algot Turestedt in Gothenburg, following a visit to New York where he was inspired by the popularity of potato chips. The name 'Estrella' means 'star' in Spanish, which is reflected in the brand's logo.
While the brand was born in Sweden, its ownership has transitioned through several large international food conglomerates over the decades. Today, Estrella is part of the Estrella Maarud Group, which is owned by Intersnack Group, a massive German-based snack food manufacturer. Despite the international ownership, production for the Swedish market remains deeply rooted locally, with the primary factory located in Angered, just outside Gothenburg. They take pride in using potatoes often sourced from Swedish farms, maintaining a strong domestic identity.
