Costa Coffee was founded in London in 1971 by Italian brothers Sergio and Bruno Costa. For decades, it grew as a quintessentially British coffee shop chain, eventually being acquired by Whitbread in 1995. This rapid expansion made it the largest coffee chain in the UK and one of the largest globally.
In early 2019, the brand underwent a significant ownership change when it was acquired by The Coca-Cola Company. This acquisition allowed Coca-Cola to establish a global presence in the coffee market, leveraging Costa's retail stores, self-service Express machines, and at-home retail products like the coffee shown in the image. Although now under American ownership, the brand maintains its British heritage and primary roasting facilities in the United Kingdom.
