Founded in London in 1970 by the Thakrar family, the brand originally focused on serving the Asian diaspora in the UK before expanding globally. Its high-quality grains are sourced primarily from the foothills of the Himalayas in India and Pakistan, where Basmati rice is traditionally grown under specific environmental conditions.

Today, Tilda is owned by Ebro Foods, a global leader in the rice sector headquartered in Spain. Ebro Foods acquired Tilda in 2019 from the American company Hain Celestial, further solidifying its position in the premium grain market. While the raw crops are imported from South Asia, the cleaning, milling, and packaging processes for the UK and European markets are largely handled at Tilda's state-of-the-art facilities in Rainham, United Kingdom.
