Splenda is a globally recognized brand of low-calorie sweeteners, best known for its sucralose-based products. The brand originated in the United Kingdom following the discovery of sucralose in 1976 by scientists at Tate & Lyle, working with researchers at Queen Elizabeth College. Following its discovery, it was developed by Tate & Lyle in partnership with Johnson & Johnson.
Today, the brand is owned by Heartland Food Products Group, an American company that acquired it from Johnson & Johnson's subsidiary, McNeil Nutritionals, in 2015. While Heartland is the ultimate owner and headquartered in Indiana, USA, the product is manufactured in several locations, with a significant amount of the chemical production occurring in Alabama, USA. The brand continues to be a market leader in the sugar substitute category worldwide.
