Ben & Jerry's began in 1978 in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont, USA. Founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield built the brand on a foundation of unique, chunky flavors and a strong commitment to social and environmental causes. The brand became a global icon for the 'super-premium' ice cream category, known for its creative names and high-quality ingredients.
In 2000, Ben & Jerry's was acquired by the British-Dutch multinational consumer goods giant Unilever. Despite the acquisition, the brand maintains an independent Board of Directors to preserve its social mission and brand integrity. Today, manufacturing for the European market is primarily centered at Unilever's state-of-the-art facility in Hellendoorn, Netherlands, as well as sites in the United Kingdom and the United States, utilizing Fairtrade certified ingredients.
