Pears is a historic British brand of soap, famously recognized as the world's first mass-market translucent soap. It was developed by Andrew Pears in 1807 in London, initially as a way to provide a gentler alternative to the harsh, often lead-filled soaps of the era. The brand became a pioneer in advertising history under Thomas J. Barratt, often called the 'father of modern advertising,' who used celebrity endorsements and iconic artwork like 'Bubbles' to build its global reputation.
Starting in 1917, the brand was acquired by Lever Brothers, which later evolved into the multinational giant Unilever. Over the decades, production shifted from its original London sites to Port Sunlight in the UK and eventually to India in the 2000s. Today, Pears is managed and manufactured by Hindustan Unilever Limited, a subsidiary of Unilever. While it remains a cherished 'British classic,' its primary manufacturing hub and largest consumer market are now in India, with distribution continuing across the United Kingdom, Nigeria, and other international regions.
