The VEF 201 is a classic portable transistor radio manufactured by the VEF (Valsts Elektrotehniskā Fabrika) factory in Riga, Latvia. Produced primarily during the late 1960s and 1970s, it remains an iconic piece of Soviet-era electronics known for its durability and reception range. These radios were widely distributed across the Eastern Bloc and were even exported internationally under the ‘Tino’ or ‘Vega’ brand names in some Western markets.

Historically, the VEF factory was the pride of Latvian industry, predating the Soviet era and continuing as a state-owned enterprise throughout the USSR's existence. Following the restoration of Latvian independence and the subsequent transition to a market economy, the original massive state enterprise faced significant challenges. Today, the brand is no longer a mass-producer of consumer electronics, and the original factory site has been largely repurposed into a cultural and business district in Riga, marking the end of its era as a global electronics powerhouse.
