Marabou is a quintessential Swedish chocolate brand that has become a staple for sweets across Scandinavia. Originally founded in 1916 by the Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst, the brand shares its roots with the Norwegian Freia brand. The Marabou name was chosen because the Freia trademark was already taken in Sweden, and it refers to the marabou stork found on the Freia logo.
While the brand holds a deep historical connection to Upplands Väsby, Sweden, modern production for various Marabou products occurs in several locations across Europe, including Lithuania and Sweden. The brand is currently owned by Mondelēz International, an American multinational conglomerate that acquired the brand through its purchase of Kraft Foods. Despite its American ownership, Marabou remains a symbol of Nordic confectionery tradition.
