Hot Wheels is a legendary brand of die-cast toy cars introduced by American toy maker Mattel in 1968. Originally conceived by Elliot Handler, the co-founder of Mattel, it was created to compete with the British brand Matchbox by offering 'California Style' custom designs and high-speed wheels. The 'Custom Otto' featured in the image is a specific model inspired by the original Hot Wheels designer Otto Kuhni, paying homage to the brand's heritage.
While the brand is fundamentally American in its design and origin, manufacturing is carried out globally to meet massive international demand. Today, Hot Wheels products are primarily manufactured in Malaysia, Thailand, and China, depending on the specific line and production year. The brand remains under the ultimate ownership of Mattel, Inc., one of the world's largest toy companies, headquartered in El Segundo, California.
