Weber is a premier global brand synonymous with outdoor cooking and American backyard culture. The brand revolutionized the industry in 1952 when George Stephen Sr. invented the iconic kettle grill by cutting a metal buoy in half. This design solved common grilling problems of the era, such as uneven heating and exposure to elements, by introducing a lid that allowed for temperature control and protection from wind.
While the brand's heart and significant manufacturing operations remain in the United States—specifically in Huntley and Palatine, Illinois—Weber has expanded its production footprint globally. To meet international demand and maintain competitive supply chains, certain components and specific product lines, such as some gas grill series and portable models, are manufactured in China and Taiwan under strict quality control standards.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned from a family-run business to a major corporate entity. After decades under the Stephen family, a majority stake was sold to BDT Capital Partners in 2010. Following a brief period as a public company starting in 2021, Weber was taken private again in 2023 by BDT & MSD Partners. Today, Weber-Stephen Products remains the primary operating entity, focusing on expanding its digital grilling technology and global market presence.
