Range Rover is a premier line of luxury four-wheel drive SUVs that serves as the flagship marque for Land Rover. Since its introduction in 1970, the brand has evolved from a rugged utility vehicle into a global symbol of automotive luxury and off-road capability. The vehicles are primarily designed and engineered in the United Kingdom, where the majority of high-end production continues to take place at the Solihull manufacturing facility.
Throughout its history, Range Rover ownership has transitioned through several major automotive groups. Originally developed by British Leyland, the brand passed through Rover Group, British Aerospace, and BMW before being sold to Ford Motor Company in 2000. Under Ford, it was part of the Premier Automotive Group. In 2008, the brand underwent its most significant recent change when it was acquired by the Indian conglomerate Tata Motors.
Today, Range Rover is a core brand under JLR (Jaguar Land Rover), which operates as a direct subsidiary of Tata Motors. While the brand maintains its British heritage through design and core engineering, it benefits from the global scale and investment of its Indian parent company. Manufacturing has also expanded globally to include assembly lines in markets like China and Slovakia to meet international demand while maintaining its status as a quintessential British luxury icon.
