KitKat is a globally recognized chocolate-covered wafer bar that was originally created by Rowntree's in York, United Kingdom, in 1935. Originally launched as 'Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp,' it was rebranded as KitKat Chocolate Crisp in 1937 and eventually just KitKat after World War II.
Today, KitKat is produced in numerous countries worldwide to meet regional demand, with major manufacturing hubs in the UK, United Arab Emirates, Bulgaria, and Malaysia. While the brand originated in the UK, it is currently owned and manufactured globally by Nestlé, a Swiss multinational. Notably, in the United States, KitKat is produced under license by The Hershey Company due to a historical agreement made before Nestlé acquired Rowntree's in 1988.
Nestlé serves as the ultimate parent company, overseeing the brand's extensive international presence and marketing. The brand continues to be a leader in the snack industry, known for its distinctive 'four-finger' shape and its iconic slogan, 'Have a break, have a KitKat.'
