Sisu is one of Finland's most iconic confectionery brands, known particularly for its strong liquorice and eucalyptus pastilles. The brand was originally created in 1928 by a chemist named Johan Sjöblom at the Seres candy factory in Turku, Finland. The name 'Sisu' refers to a unique Finnish concept of stoic determination, tenacity, and bravery, which is reflected in the product's strong, punchy flavor profile.
Today, the brand is owned by Cloetta AB, a major Nordic confectionery company. While the brand is deeply rooted in Finnish heritage and remains a cultural staple in the country, production has been consolidated within Cloetta's modern manufacturing facilities. Consequently, Sisu pastilles are primarily manufactured in Slovakia rather than Finland. Despite the change in manufacturing location, the brand continues to be managed and marketed primarily for the Finnish and Northern European markets, maintaining its historical recipe and iconic black-and-silver branding.
