Gevalia is one of the most recognized heritage brands in Scandinavia, tracing its origins back to 1853 in Gävle, Sweden. Founded by Victor Theodor Engwall, the brand quickly became a staple in Swedish households and eventually earned the prestigious title of Purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden. Known for its smooth, rich flavors, the 'Mellanrost' (medium roast) variant featured in the image remains a core product in its European portfolio.
While Gevalia originated as a family-run Swedish company, it underwent significant corporate shifts over the last century. In 2015, following a major merger in the global coffee sector, the brand's ownership structure became divided. In the European market, Gevalia is owned and operated by JDE Peet's, a global coffee and tea powerhouse headquartered in the Netherlands. In North America, the brand is managed separately by the Kraft Heinz Company.
Manufacturing for the European instant coffee line primarily takes place in Europe, specifically Sweden and Germany, utilizing beans sourced from various global coffee-growing regions. Despite its multinational ownership, the brand maintains its identity as Sweden's premier coffee brand through traditional roasting profiles and iconic red packaging.
