Listerine is one of the world's most iconic oral hygiene brands, with a history dating back to 1879. It was named after Sir Joseph Lister, a British surgeon who pioneered antiseptic surgery. The formula was originally developed by Dr. Joseph Lawrence in St. Louis, Missouri, and was initially marketed as a general antiseptic and even a floor cleaner before becoming famous as a mouthwash to combat 'halitosis'.

For the European market, and specifically for products found in Spain like the one in the image, Listerine is primarily manufactured at specialized facilities in Italy (notably in the Pomezia region). The brand has undergone several ownership changes over the decades, moving from Warner-Lambert to Pfizer, and then to Johnson & Johnson in 2006. In 2023, Johnson & Johnson spun off its consumer health division into a new independent company called Kenvue. As of 2026, Kenvue is being integrated into Kimberly-Clark following a major acquisition aimed at creating a global leader in health and wellness.
