Tor Browser is a specialized web browser designed to provide anonymity and protect privacy by routing traffic through the Tor network. It was originally derived from the Mozilla Firefox browser and modified to enhance security features. The project has its roots in research conducted by the United States Naval Research Laboratory in the mid-1990s, with the goal of protecting U.S. government communications.
Today, the software is developed and maintained by The Tor Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) research-education nonprofit organization based in the United States. Unlike commercial products, Tor is open-source and primarily funded by government grants, private foundations, and individual donations rather than a traditional corporate owner. It remains a key tool for privacy advocates, journalists, and activists worldwide.
