Toblerone is a world-renowned chocolate brand famous for its distinctive triangular shape, which mimics the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. Created in 1908 by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann in Bern, Switzerland, the chocolate is known for its unique blend of milk chocolate, honey, and almond nougat. The brand name is a portmanteau of Tobler's surname and the Italian word 'torrone', a type of nougat.
Historically, all Toblerone production took place at the company's factory in Bern-Brünnen. However, following the brand's acquisition by multinational entities, production expanded. In 2023, while the majority of production remains in Switzerland, some manufacturing was relocated to Slovakia to meet global demand. This change led to adjustments in packaging to comply with Swiss legal requirements regarding the use of national symbols on products made outside Switzerland.
Today, Toblerone is owned by Mondelez International, an American multinational confectionery and snack food giant. Despite several changes in corporate ownership over the decades—from the original Tobler & Cie. to Interfood, then Jacobs Suchard, and Kraft Foods—Toblerone has maintained its status as a premium global brand synonymous with Swiss confectionery heritage.
