The Lada Granta is a subcompact car developed and manufactured by the Russian automaker AvtoVAZ in collaboration with Renault during their former partnership. It was launched in 2011 as a more affordable and modern replacement for the aging Lada Zhiguli and Samara series. Since its debut, it has consistently been one of the best-selling cars in the Russian Federation due to its low cost, reliability, and adaptation to harsh road conditions.
Historically, the brand AvtoVAZ was formed as a Soviet state-owned enterprise in Tolyatti. While it spent several years under the majority ownership of the Renault Group, the company's ownership structure shifted significantly following geopolitical events in 2022. Renault divested its Russian assets, leading to the transfer of its 67.69% stake in AvtoVAZ to the Russian state-owned NAMI institute for a symbolic price. This transition returned full control of the Lada brand and its manufacturing plants to Russian state interests.
Today, the Lada Granta is primarily produced at the Tolyatti assembly plant, the largest automobile factory in Russia. While the vehicle originally utilized various global components and platforms derived from the Renault-Nissan alliance, production has increasingly moved toward domestic components to ensure self-sufficiency in the local market.
