Unicum is a legendary Hungarian herbal liqueur, often regarded as the national drink of Hungary. It was originally created in 1790 by József Zwack, a physician to the Habsburg Emperor Joseph II. The recipe remains a well-guarded family secret, consisting of over 40 different herbs and spices that are distilled and then aged in oak casks for six months.

The history of the brand is closely tied to the Zwack family, who have maintained ownership for over two centuries. Despite the company being nationalized during the communist era in Hungary, the family managed to keep the authentic recipe abroad and returned to Hungary in the late 1980s to reclaim their business. Today, Unicum is primarily produced in Budapest at the Zwack family distillery and is distributed worldwide, maintaining its iconic status and distinctive round bottle design.
