Cetaphil was established in 1947 by a pharmacist in Texas, USA. The first product, Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion (now known as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser), was formulated specifically for dermatologists to treat sensitive skin. Over the decades, the brand gained a global reputation for its gentle, non-irritating formulas, becoming a staple in both medical skincare and consumer retail markets.
Cetaphil products are produced in several high-tech manufacturing facilities across the globe to meet international demand. Major production hubs are located in Canada (specifically Baie-D'Urfé), France, Germany, and the United States. The brand adheres to strict dermatological standards, ensuring their pH-balanced products remain suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin types worldwide.
Originally part of Galderma—a joint venture founded in 1981 between Nestlé and L'Oréal—the brand's ownership shifted significantly in 2014 when Nestlé acquired full control. In 2019, Nestlé sold its skin health division, Galderma, to a consortium of institutional investors led by EQT Partners and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA). Today, Galderma operates as an independent, pure-play dermatology company headquartered in Switzerland, managing Cetaphil as its leading consumer brand.
