Pocky is one of the world's most recognizable snacks, consisting of a chocolate-coated biscuit stick. Invented in Japan in 1966, the product was originally named after the Japanese onomatopoeic word pokkin, which describes the sound made when the biscuit snaps. It was created to provide a convenient, mess-free way to enjoy chocolate on the go, originally leaving a small portion of the biscuit uncoated to serve as a handle.
Over the decades, Pocky has expanded from its original chocolate flavor to include an extensive variety of coatings such as strawberry, matcha, and cookies and cream. It has become a cultural phenomenon, particularly in Asia, and is celebrated annually on November 11th as 'Pocky Day' due to the date (11/11) resembling the shape of the snack sticks.
Today, the brand remains under the ownership of its founding company, Ezaki Glico Co., Ltd. While it originated in Japan, the massive global demand led to the establishment of manufacturing facilities in Thailand, China, and France to serve international markets. The brand is managed globally by Glico's various regional subsidiaries, maintaining its status as a staple of Japanese confectionery culture.
