Häagen-Dazs is a globally renowned premium ice cream brand that originated in the United States. It was established in 1960 by Reuben and Rose Mattus in Brooklyn, New York, with a focus on using natural ingredients and high-quality cream. The brand name was intentionally chosen to sound Scandinavian as a marketing strategy to imply quality and heritage, though it has no linguistic meaning in any Nordic language.
The manufacturing of Häagen-Dazs products is distributed globally. For European and many international markets, the primary production facility is located in Tilloy-lès-Mofflaines, France. In North America, the brand is manufactured locally through licensed partnerships. Product ownership is split: General Mills owns the brand globally, but in the United States and Canada, it is licensed to Froneri, a joint venture between Nestlé and PAI Partners. Outside of North America, General Mills manages the brand directly and through various subsidiaries.
