Rothaus Tannenzäpfle is a renowned Pilsner beer brewed in the heart of Germany's Black Forest. Its name 'Tannenzäpfle' translates to 'little pine cone,' a nod to the iconic coniferous trees that dominate the surrounding mountain landscape. The brand is famous for its distinctive label featuring 'Birgit,' a woman in traditional Black Forest attire, which has remained largely unchanged for decades, achieving a cult classic status among beer enthusiasts.
The brewing process takes place at the Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus, which is situated at one of the highest altitudes of any brewery in Germany. This location provides access to soft, pure spring water which is essential for the clean, crisp profile of the beer. Since its introduction in 1956, it has grown from a regional favorite to a nationally and internationally recognized specialty beer.
Ownership of the brewery is unique; it is a state-owned enterprise, belonging to the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg. Unlike many other major German beer brands that have been acquired by multinational conglomerates, Rothaus remains under public ownership, ensuring that its production remains tied to its historical and geographical roots in Graftenhausen.
