The brand name is an abbreviation of 'Jodium Zout' (Iodine Salt), reflecting its original mission to help eliminate iodine deficiency in the Dutch population. The salt is primarily sourced and manufactured in the Netherlands, specifically from local salt mines like those in Hengelo and Delfzijl.

Today, the brand is owned by Salins Group (Groupe Salins), a major European salt producer. For many years, it was part of AkzoNobel's specialty chemicals division until that business, including JOZO, was sold to private equity firms and eventually consolidated under the Salins Group's international portfolio. The brand continues to be a household staple across Western Europe, known for its various grain sizes and specialty sea salts.
