Lucozade Sport is an isotonic sports drink designed to provide carbohydrates and electrolytes to enhance hydration and fuel performance during physical activity. The brand has a rich history originating in the United Kingdom, where it was first created in 1927 by a chemist named William Owen as a glucose-based energy source for recovery from illness. Originally called Glucozade, it was renamed Lucozade in 1929 and eventually evolved from a medicinal aid into a mainstream sports and energy beverage.
Today, Lucozade is primarily manufactured in the United Kingdom, specifically at the Royal Forest Factory in Coleford, Gloucestershire. The brand was historically owned by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) but was sold in 2013 to the Japanese multinational conglomerate Suntory. It is now operated under the Suntory Beverage & Food Great Britain and Ireland division, which continues to manage its production and distribution across European markets while maintaining its British heritage.
