Maarud is one of the most iconic snack brands in Norway, with a heritage dating back to 1936 when it was established at Maarud Gård in Sør-Odal. The brand is specifically famous for its 'Potetgull' (Potato Gold), a term it long held as a trademark in the Norwegian market. Most of their potato-based products are still manufactured in Norway using locally sourced potatoes from farms near their production facility.
Over the decades, the ownership of Maarud has transitioned from family ownership to large international conglomerates. Since 2014, Maarud has been a central part of the Intersnack Group, a major European snack manufacturer. This ownership places the brand under a German-headquartered ultimate parent company, though the brand maintains its strong Norwegian identity and local production roots to serve the Nordic market.
