Truvia is a prominent brand of stevia-based sweeteners that was first introduced to the consumer market in 2008. The product was revolutionary as one of the first widely available zero-calorie tabletop sweeteners derived from the stevia leaf (specifically steviol glycosides), providing a plant-based alternative to artificial sweeteners like aspartame or saccharin.
The brand was born out of a strategic partnership between two major industry players: Cargill, Incorporated and The Coca-Cola Company. While Coca-Cola was instrumental in the technical development and original patenting of the Rebiana extract used in the sweetener, Cargill serves as the primary manufacturer and commercial owner of the brand. Today, Truvia products are manufactured across multiple facilities, primarily in the United States, utilizing stevia leaves sourced globally, including from South America and Asia.
As of the 2020s, Truvia remains under the ultimate ownership of Cargill. It has expanded its product line from simple packets to includes baking blends, liquid sweeteners, and monk fruit varieties, maintaining its position as a market leader in the natural sweetener category.
