Hanjin originated as a cornerstone of the South Korean economy, founded by Cho Choong-hoon in 1945 as Hanjin Transportation Co., Ltd. Over decades, it expanded into a global logistics powerhouse, best known internationally for Hanjin Shipping, which was once one of the world's largest container lines before its high-profile liquidation in 2017 following financial instability.

Today, the Hanjin brand primarily exists through Hanjin Kal and its subsidiaries, including Korean Air and Hanjin Transportation. The group operates heavily within South Korea and across international trade routes, providing air cargo, land transportation, and port stevedoring services. While the shipping line ceased operations, the logistics and aviation arms continue to be managed under the Hanjin Group umbrella.

Ownership of the Hanjin brand remains centered in South Korea under the control of the Cho family through the holding company Hanjin Kal. The group is a prominent example of a 'chaebol,' a large industrial conglomerate that is family-owned and managed, maintaining a significant influence over South Korea's transportation infrastructure and global trade connectivity.
