The brand is inextricably linked to its founder, Albert Heijn, who began the grocery business in Oostzaan in 1887. Today, the brand and the store chain are owned by Ahold Delhaize, a major global retail group headquartered in Zaandam. Ahold Delhaize was formed through the 2016 merger of the Dutch Ahold and the Belgian Delhaize Group, creating one of the world's largest food retail groups with a strong presence in both Europe and the United States.
