Sharp Corporation is a historic Japanese brand that pioneered numerous electronics technologies, including the first Japanese-made crystal radio sets and the world's first LCD calculators. For decades, it stood as a titan of Japanese engineering, headquartered in Sakai, Osaka.
In 2016, following financial challenges, Sharp was acquired by Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd.), a massive Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturer. This marked the first acquisition of a major Japanese electronics company by a foreign firm. Today, Sharp products are manufactured globally, with significant production facilities in Japan, China, Malaysia, and Poland to serve different regional markets.
Under Foxconn's leadership, Sharp has focused on its display technologies and smart home ecosystems. While the brand maintains its Japanese heritage and identity, its ultimate strategic and financial direction is controlled from Taiwan.
