Milka is one of Europe's most iconic chocolate brands, instantly recognizable by its distinctive lilac-colored packaging and the 'Lila' Alpine cow mascot. The brand's history dates back to 1825, when Swiss chocolatier Philippe Suchard established his confectionery in Neuchâtel. However, the specific Milka brand was officially launched in 1901, with its name being a clever portmanteau of its primary ingredients: Milch (milk) and Kakao (cocoa).

While the brand was born in Switzerland, its production shifted significantly to Germany early in the 20th century. Today, the main manufacturing hub is located in Lörrach, Germany, which produces the vast majority of Milka bars sold across the continent. Additional production facilities are located in countries like Austria and Slovakia to meet global demand.

In terms of ownership, Milka has transitioned through several major corporate mergers. It was part of Jacobs Suchard until 1990 when it was acquired by the American multinational Kraft Foods. In 2012, Kraft Foods split into two entities, and Milka became a flagship brand under Mondelēz International. As of 2026, Mondelēz continues to be the ultimate owner, managing the brand's global expansion and maintaining its heritage of using 100% Alpine milk.
