The brand was established in 1981 by Scottish climber Rab Carrington in Sheffield, England, out of a need for more robust and reliable equipment for mountaineering. While the design and technical testing processes continue to be headquartered in the United Kingdom, manufacturing is distributed globally, with significant production facilities located in Cambodia, China, and Indonesia to meet international demand.

In 2003, ownership of the brand transitioned when Equip Outdoor Technologies Ltd, founded by Matt Gowar, acquired Rab. Under this ownership, the brand has expanded its global footprint significantly while maintaining its core identity as a technical mountain brand. Equip Outdoor Technologies remains the ultimate owner company, overseeing both Rab and its sister brand, Lowe Alpine, from their headquarters in Derbyshire, UK. The company continues to invest in sustainable manufacturing practices and technical innovation to serve the global climbing and hiking community.
