Osprey is a world-renowned outdoor gear brand that trace its roots back to 1974 in Santa Cruz, California. Founded by Mike Pfotenhauer, the company initially gained fame for creating custom-fitted, made-to-order backpacks for mountaineers and hikers. Over the decades, the brand relocated its headquarters to Cortez, Colorado, which remains a key operational hub today.

In terms of manufacturing, Osprey made a strategic shift in the early 2000s to move the bulk of its production to Vietnam and South Korea to meet global demand while maintaining high quality. The founder even relocated his family to Ho Chi Minh City for several years to establish a dedicated design and quality control center, ensuring that the brand's technical standards were upheld. Today, while the vast majority of products are manufactured in Vietnam, the company maintains a small specialized team of sewers in Colorado for warranty repairs and specialized projects.

In late 2021, Osprey was acquired by Helen of Troy Limited, a major consumer products conglomerate. This acquisition integrated Osprey into a portfolio of high-end outdoor and lifestyle brands, such as Hydro Flask, positioning it for continued global growth under a large corporate umbrella.
