Cetaphil was established in 1947 in the United States by a pharmacist. The brand’s first product was the Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion, which is now famously known as the Gentle Skin Cleanser. Designed specifically for dermatological use, it quickly gained a reputation for being mild enough for sensitive skin.
Cetaphil is produced in multiple locations globally to serve its international markets. Major manufacturing facilities are located in Canada, the United States, France, and Brazil. This decentralized production allows the brand to maintain high quality standards while ensuring efficient distribution to clinical and retail outlets worldwide.
Originally part of Galderma, which was a joint venture between Nestlé and L'Oréal, the brand underwent a significant ownership change in 2019. Galderma was acquired by a consortium of institutional investors led by EQT Partners. Today, Galderma operates as one of the world's largest independent dermatology companies, overseeing Cetaphil as its flagship consumer brand.
