Niemetz Schwedenbomben are an iconic Austrian confectionery item, famously known as chocolate-coated marshmallows on a wafer base, often decorated with coconut flakes. They were first created in 1926 by Walter Niemetz and his wife Johanna in Vienna. The product quickly became a staple of Austrian sweets culture, maintaining a high level of brand recognition for nearly a century.
Historically produced by the family-owned Walter Niemetz Süßwarenfabrik, the company faced significant financial challenges in the early 21st century. In 2013, the brand was acquired by the Austrian Heidi Chocolat Group, which ensured the survival of the product while keeping production firmly within Austria. Today, Schwedenbomben are primarily manufactured at a modern facility in Wiener Neudorf, Lower Austria, preserving their original heritage and local roots.
The brand is currently part of the Heidi Chocolat Group, which is itself owned by Julius Meinl am Graben. This ownership structure places the brand under the umbrella of one of Austria's most prestigious luxury food groups, headquartered in Vienna. The transition to this group has allowed Schwedenbomben to expand its availability while maintaining the traditional recipe that made it famous.
