Toblerone is an iconic chocolate brand famous for its unique triangular shape, symbolizing the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. Created in 1908 by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann in Bern, Switzerland, the brand's name is a portmanteau of the founder's surname and 'torrone,' the Italian word for honey and almond nougat.
Historically, all production was centralized in Bern; however, in recent years, Mondelēz International shifted part of its production to Bratislava, Slovakia, to optimize global supply chains. As a result of this move beyond Swiss borders, the brand had to remove the 'of Switzerland' claim and the specific Matterhorn image from some packaging to comply with 'Swissness' legislation. Today, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of the American multinational food conglomerate Mondelēz International.
