Darlie, originally known as Darkie, is a popular oral care brand with a long and complex history in East and Southeast Asia. The brand was established in Shanghai in 1933 by the Hawley & Hazel Chemical Company. Its distinctive logo, featuring a man in a top hat, has undergone several revisions over the decades to address historical racial sensitivities.
In 1985, the American multinational Colgate-Palmolive acquired a 50% stake in Hawley & Hazel, forming a joint venture. Today, the brand is managed through this partnership. Darlie products, including toothpaste and mouthwash, are manufactured in various locations across Asia, including China and Thailand, to serve regional markets like Indonesia, where this specific product was found. The brand remains a dominant player in the Asian oral hygiene sector, leveraging the combined expertise of its original founders and the global resources of Colgate-Palmolive.
