Staples (known as Bureau en Gros in Québec) is a leading retailer originally founded in the United States. While the brand has global recognition, the Canadian operations, operating under the Staples Canada / Bureau en Gros banner, are distinct from the American entity. Most private-label products found in their stores are manufactured in various locations globally, primarily across Asia and North America, depending on the specific stationary or electronic category.
In 2017, the private equity firm Sycamore Partners acquired Staples, Inc. Subsequent to this, the Canadian division was separated into its own entity. In 2023, Sycamore Partners acquired Office Depot and OfficeMax in the US, while in Canada, Staples remains the dominant specialty workplace brand. The ownership structure reflects a private equity model focused on large-scale retail distribution and e-commerce growth.
