Rügenwalder Mühle is one of Germany's most prominent food brands, successfully transitioning from a traditional meat processor to a leader in the vegetarian and vegan market. The Vegetarische Mühlen Würstchen (Vegetarian Mill Sausages) are designed to replicate the taste and texture of classic Wiener sausages using plant-based proteins.
The brand was originally founded in 1834 by Carl Müller in Rügenwalde, Pomerania (now Darłowo, Poland), but relocated to Bad Zwischenahn, Lower Saxony, after World War II. For nearly two centuries, it remained a family-owned enterprise.
In a significant shift in the food industry landscape, the family owners reached an agreement in late 2023 to sell the majority stake of the company to the Pfeifer & Langen Industrie- und Handels-KG. This acquisition, finalized in 2024, places Rügenwalder Mühle under the same corporate umbrella as other well-known brands like Intersnack (Funny-Frisch). The brand continues to produce its high-quality vegetarian and meat products primarily in its state-of-the-art facilities in Germany.
