Toblerone is a globally recognized chocolate brand famous for its unique triangular shape, symbolizing the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. It was created in 1908 by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann in Bern, Switzerland. The name is a portmanteau of Tobler's name and the Italian word 'torrone,' a type of honey and almond nougat.
Historically, all production took place in Bern. However, following the acquisition by multinational food conglomerate Mondelēz International, some production has been shifted to Slovakia to meet global demand. Due to strict 'Swissness' laws, this shift required the brand to remove the Matterhorn imagery and 'of Switzerland' text from some of its packaging, replacing it with a more generic mountain logo and labeling it as 'established in Switzerland'.
